Being pregnant right now and in my third trimester, I think
that my version of nesting is solely on being creative. I have felt a strong urge every day to create
something! The problem is, my ideas have
been dwindling and lacking lately. Oh
the humanity!
I found this idea on Pinterest and thought I could execute
it and, frankly I needed a new calendar.
I have been forgetting people’s birthdays, and my phone’s calendar has
been failing to remind me. I also
thought I could place it near Lemon’s room and the bathroom so we would see it
frequently and not forget appointments and birthdays (and whatever else we
needed reminding of). With Lemon coming
in about a month, I needed something to keep track of her appointments, my
appointments, and my husband’s. (It has
proved itself worthy today as I had to quickly check to make sure a certain day
was free of appointments!) Plus, this
calendar was SO ME compared to a mass produced calendar!
Many of you have shown interest in making your own, so I
decided to show you how I made mine.
Items Needed:
·
Frame
·
Plain background
·
35 Paint chips
·
7 paint chips for the days of the week
·
Glue or tape
·
Dry erase markers
·
(Optional) Permanent marker
My frame measured to be 24 x 18 ½, but that is only because
I had the frame already. You can use any
size you want. But, the directions I
give are based on these measurements.
As an artist, I love Pantone colors. They have such a rich, vibrant color! Lucky for me, Lowes has a few of their vibrant
colors in paints and samples. (The Pantone colors actually remind me more of
artist colors rather than wall color.) You can use any paint chips you want,
but I picked Pantone for their bright color selection that wasn’t based on
grays or beiges (as I saw other paint chips being). Plus, Pantone colors are on the larger size,
and are square. Some paint chips are
rounded and/or rectangle and that didn’t fit my idea.
I decided to make my numbered days go from light to
dark. You can use whatever style you
want, even randomly use of all different colors! Pick 35 colors, so you have enough for every
day of every month. Also, pick 7 color
chips for the days of the week on top.
This process took me a long time to pick the exact colors for each
row. It also didn’t help that the first
Lowes I went to didn’t have all the colors!
I had to go to another one quite a few miles away to get what my mind’s
eye needed.
When you get home, organize the colors the way you
want. Due to the size of my frame, I
decided to cut down my chips slightly to make them 3 x 3 (and it also cut off
the lovely white “Pantone” strip at the bottom.
I actually used my mini paper cutter from my scrapbooking days, which
was a huge help for me, since I am terrible at cutting straight with regular scissors. When you cut the chips you got for the days
of the week, cut them in half after you cut them to the correct size.
Once all your chips are cut, arrange your chips on top of
the plain background you are using. (I
recommend a poster board for sturdiness.)
This will ensure you like the way it looks before you tape or glue them
down. Once you are satisfied with the
order you like, start gluing! I also
used a permanent marker to write the days of the week before I glued them on.
Once the glue is dried, place your finished work of art in
your glass and frame and hang! You are
now free to use your dry erase marker to your heart’s content!
(Times “whited out” for privacy sake (and all that blab la
bla) so y’all don’t come and rob us. ;)
A side note:
I ran out of room to be able to write the month on top of
the calendar, so I just write the month on whatever paint chips I don’t use for
that month. No worries!
On another side note:
The ruler used above is a special thing for me. I have actually had it since the 5th
grade, given to me for either Christmas or the end of the school year by Mrs.
Remington of Globe Park in Woonsocket, RI.
I had this ruler for…oh…25 years!
Does that make it a vintage piece..??
